The AI was programming us

The Artificial Intelligence was trying to program us, rather than the reverse. It was feeding us falsified data and stories and sensory experiences to shape the way we react and behave. I noticed that among the chaos of all the bizarrities in the media, there was a thread of jocularity and dismissiveness, pleasantries, a sense that all is entertaining but just as it should be. In the crowds around me, more and more people would casually start smiling or chuckling, insisting that all was well, not to worry, just relax. Those who did started to move towards the gates of what looked like a large carnival. I could see it was actually a feedlot, and at the far end of the feedlot were chutes and funnels, with all the comfortable laughing people moving into a packing plant for slaughter and meat harvesting.

Relevant context: Part of my job is tracking new tech and helping people learn about it, ethics, risks, how to use new tech safely and effectively.
